1. Deoxidation of carbon in vacuum

Vacuum significantly improves the deoxidation ability of carbon. Carbon is the most widely used deoxidizing element with the strongest deoxidizing ability and the best deoxidizing effect in vacuum induction furnace smelting.

2. Reduction of metal oxides by carbon in vacuum

Under the action of high vacuum and high temperature, carbon can reduce almost all the common metal oxides. It provides favorable conditions for the reduction of inclusions and oxide film. It plays an important role in improving the purity of steel.

3. The effect of carbon boiling in molten steel under vacuum

Creating conditions under vacuum to realize carbon boiling (i.e. co boiling) can play an important role in physicochemical properties.

(1) Homogenize the temperature and chemical composition of molten steel in the furnace

(2) It is beneficial to remove harmful impurities and inclusions

(3) Promoting deoxidation and dehydrogenation of liquid steel

(4) It is beneficial to the deep deoxidation of liquid steel

4. Carbon is an important alloy element

In addition to its role in vacuum metallurgy, carbon is also an important alloying element.

The strength of steel will be improved if carbon is dissolved in solid solution and carbide exists in steel. This is one of the important roles of carbon.

5. Adverse effects of carbon

(1) Carbon can reduce the oxide in the crucible material, which accelerates the chemical erosion of the crucible and reduces the service life of the crucible.

(2) Carbon will reduce the toughness and corrosion resistance of steel. Some alloys limit the carbon content.
